- About the Album:
- Freedom in the Groove is the fourth studio album by acclaimed American jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman, released in 1996, by Warner Bros. Records. This project marked an evolutionary step in Redman's career, departing from the traditional hard bop framework of his earlier trio and quartet works to explore diverse rhythmic domains. He deliberately blurred stylistic boundaries, integrating elements of groove, blues, funk, gospel, and R&B into a purely acoustic setting. Notably, Freedom in the Groove was the first album where Redman expanded his instrumental arsenal to include the alto and soprano saxophones alongside his signature tenor, while introducing a prominent guitar presence into his band configuration.
