- About the Album:
- Midnight Special is a landmark soul-jazz album by the legendary American jazz organist Jimmy Smith, released in 1961 by Blue Note Records. The album demonstrates Smith's absolute mastery of the Hammond B-3 electronic organ. In an astonishing display of volcanic creativity, the entire album was recorded at the iconic Van Gelder Studio in a single day—April 25, 1960—during the exact same recording session that produced his other legendary masterpiece, Back at the Chicken Shack. Midnight Special is highly celebrated for its perfect fusion of hard bop, gospel blues, and deep, grooving rhythm.
